Ubuntu 6 on HP Pavillion DV5118TX notebook (SATA HDD) does not work

Hi,

I have Windows XP on my HP pavillion dv5118tx notebook and I tried to install Ubuntu 6 but even after installation it did not work. It would take me to the prompt but never boot in GUI.i have a SATA HDD and installing XP is also a problem. Could this be the problem with Ubuntu? If yes, then can you please suggest what do I do? I do not have drivers and Ubuntu never asked me to install any HDD driver. And if there is a special way to install third party drivers in Ubuntu then please tell me that (like it is F6 in windows xp installtion initiation).

Regards,
AJ

"It didn't work" isn't very helpful. Exactly what didn't work? What error messages? You need to explain exactly what problem you're having if you want a useful reply.

I am sorry about that, here is a little more detailed one...

The installation was successful (at least it seemed so). But then, when you take out the Installation Disc and Ubuntu installs the packages (after the reboot) I got error messages like -

BIOS handoff failed
0X0000452452 memeroy allocation failed (this is the closest to what I remember as an error).

Then the linux boot would continue and ultimately I would be shown the prompt to login but NO GUI. If I do startx or <b>init 5, it says <b>command not found.

I even figured out that X11 package is not installed but installation was perfect (it seemed perfect).

Thanks a lot for your kind help.
AJ
