At first glance, it would seem that the wireless is sensed, but may not have the right drivers or firmware.

What kind of wireless chip does dmesg (or lspci--it will give you less output to wade through) report?

that is the lspci line

01:00.0 Network controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8187SE Wireless LAN Controller (rev 22)

the lines I posted before come from dmesg after the module loads.

This might help:

First, though, I would suggest that you open the restricted drives in the Synaptic Package Manager and look in there.

Start Synaptic and go to Settings-->Repositories-->Ubuntu and enable the "Proprietary Drivers for Devices (Restricted)" item, then search for Realtek.

Currently the only solution is to install the windows driver. Sadly many linux wifi drivers are very broken

Wireless has been Linux's Achilles heel for a long time.

I have used ndiswrapper to make wireless drivers work in Linux. I'm batting .500 at that.

This is a ubuntu issue not a Linux issue. The more I use ubuntu the more I hate it. It seem geared up for people who should have never been using Linux in the first place. Easypeasy Linux works just fine and runs faster.
