I'm in the market for a new laptop and would ideally like to have a tri boot with fedora 7, vista and xp <= don't yell at me
I'm pretty sure there isn't, but is there a way if i get a laptop with vista installed, i can partition it so i have space for xp and fedora? I already have xp and fedora and if it comes with vista i dont want to have to wipe it and buy the system builders one. Am i wrong or do i have to beg the company for an installation cd?
It depends. Some have an option for a real install CD, others just have a restore partition or a restore CD. Not sure about Vista nor have I had a chance to attempt to install linux on an already configured Vista computer. In general you should be able to resize windows the other operating systems. Without an original installation CD if Vista crashes and you have to reinstall your going to be reinstalling everything.
I would recommend booting Knoppix or another LiveCD, resizing the Vista partition in gparted (deleting the recovery partition if you want - it just wastes space if you have a recovery DVD), and creating partitions for XP and Linux.
