Touchpad Not Working / Detected on Acer TravelMate 4063LCi

A friend of mine just bought an Acer TravelMate 4063LCi and was trying to install RHEL v4 U1 on it to play around with Oracle. Unfortunately, his mouse doesn't work in X. I searched around and set the mouse to synaptics using system-config-mouse, but none of the changes are modifying /etc/X11/xorg.conf. I read around and tried setting it manually. However, I noticed something strange. Certain parameters such as the device and so forth are supposed to be available by running:

cat /proc/bus/input/devices

However, when I run this command, I only get one entry and that's for the keyboard, not the mouse. Here's the output of the cat above:

I: Bus=0011 Vendor=0001 Product=0001 Version=abba
N: Name="AT Translated Set 2 Keyboard"
P: Phys=isa0060/serio0/input0
H: Handlers=kbd event0
B: EV=120013
B: KEY=4 2000000 3802078 f840d001 f2ffffdf ffefffff ffffffff fffffffe
B: MSC=10
B: LED=7

Any ideas? Thanks for your help.

I was able to successfully use a Kanotixs live cd to see the synaptic keyboard. When I run cat /proc/bus/input/devices, it gives me 3 entries instead of 1:

I: Bus=0011 Vendor=0002 Product=0007 Version=0000
N: Name="SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad"
P: Phys=isa0060/serio1/input0
H: Handlers=mouse0 event1
B: EV=b
B: KEY=6420 0 7000f 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
B: ABS=11000003

I: Bus=0011 Vendor=0001 Product=0001 Version=ab41
N: Name="AT Translated Set 2 keyboard"
P: Phys=isa0060/serio0/input0
H: Handlers=kbd event0
B: EV=120013
B: KEY=4 2000000 3802078 f840d001 f2ffffdf ffefffff ffffffff ffffffff
B: MSC=10
B: LED=7

I: Bus=0010 Vendor=001f Product=0001 Version=0100
N: Name="PC Speaker"
P: Phys=isa0061/input0
H: Handlers=kbd event2
B: EV=40001
B: SND=6

but RHEL only sees one. Any ideas?
