Question touchpad not autodetected by Fedora Core 2 on my Amilo A7600 laptop

Hi,

On my Fujitsu-Siemens AMILO A7600 laptop when Fedora Core 2 is initally booting from install cd it does not autodetect the touchpad and says I have to use text mode as I have no mouse configured.

So I install with text mode and when the system installs it still cannot see the touchpad.

I put a usb mouse in and it autodetected it a boot time (obviously not ideal to use an external mouse with a laptop). I used this setup to configure the system (internet access via ethernet and ran up2date to see if that helped) also patched the bios to the latest 1.10 release - did not make any difference.

Strangely I tried "damn small linux (DSL) 0.7" which is based on kernel 2.4 and this booted and picked up the touchpad - confirming that it was sitting on /dev/psaux. I tried to copy the config from XFree86 on DSL and use a modified version on XORG based FC2 however it still did not pick up the touchpad (I even unconfigured the external USB2 mouse - still made no difference).

I even tried downloading and installing the synaptics driver and followed the instructions ... i.e. make, make install, vi /etc/X11/xorg.conf making necessary changes. - X would not start complaining about no synaptic device found probing
ing 33 times !!

Tried to install FC1 as I had enough - on the screen that test the cd (or rather as it is loading linux it turns the keyboard off !!!!!! !!!!!!! ) so I can't skip it and go to the install !!!! - anyway.

If anyone knows how to install touchpad on this blasted machine with FC2 I would really appreciate an answer as ... to quote a friend
"it's been emotional"

Cheers,

John

I am not familiar with that piece of hardare but linux-on-laptops.com has links to users' installation logs for most laptops, including this one for an Amilo A7600.

Lightbulb A7600 Fedora Core 2 weirdness

Hi,

Thanks for that link - I had seen it before but it only skimmed it.

Reading it I found that their was a user group on yahoo - so I went their - someone mentioned an i8042.nomux kernel parameter and a link to the http://www.fedorafaq.org/. So using the install cd's I passed the parameter and it picked up the touchpad !! - excellent so I restarted notebook and booted the installed fc2 - using e I think on the GRUB menu to pass the parameter - FC2 booted with - you guessed it - NO touchpad support still !!

The only difference being is that I installed FC2 from the DVD, whereas I used the CD's for my test with the i8042.numux thing - so the only think I can conclude is that something is different in the DVD than in the CD's - hmmm FC3 is definately going to be a CD burning excercise for me and not a DVD one - but the DVD and CDs are Surely the same and they are both FC2 so I must be crazy

maybe this is of use to others having the same problem that is why I replied.

Cheers,

John
