Touchpad is generally very unresponsive in Debian based distros

If I pop the live cd of knoppix in, the performance is excellent. But when I use either Debian or Ubuntu nearly half of my taps don't get acknowledged, particularly on double-taps.

Any ideas?

Odd, I haven't noticed an any touchpads I've used. Not that I use Debian, but Ubuntu and some others Debian-based, and they all seem to work fine.

Have you took a look at dmesg (for example), or Xorg.0.log, when you tap the pad and you don't get a response; any errors out there? Or any errors/warnings during startup?
