Toshiba Tecra 8200 video issue

hi all,
I am having a problem installing RedHat 9 on my Toshiba Tecra 8200. The Laptop has a Trident CyberbladeXP chip with a 1400x1050 LCD.

When I tried to install via graphical I only get the bottom half of the screen. I had to install via linux text. Everything is now installed but I still have the same problem when I try to run X. I have searched and searched trying to fix this but I have been unsucessfull. I have Xfree 4.3 installed and I have tried other peoples XF86Config but it always cuts 1/2 the screen off...

My latest attempt to get it to work was to dl the driver from xfree86<dot>org/~alanh (trident_drv.o) specificly xfree86<dot> org/~alanh/drivers/x86/
but it did not work. I get an error: module ABI minor version 7 is newer than the server's version (6)

If anyone has a Tecra 8200 or has gotten this chip to work please e-mail me or post exactly how you were able to do it. I have been trying for 3 days... I will name my unborn child after you...
your humble servent,
dec.

Download knoppix http://www.knoppix.org/ burn and run it. Its a bootable cd with VERY good harware detection. in its initialization it will tell you all the info about your monitor and card. also see if the problem persists in knoppix too. if not then you can copy the info from xf86config file for knoppix and paste it into your local file. It SHOULD work.

ps. for the unborn child, my name is Gene/Eugene :D

well I got knoppix to load and I took the XF86Config-4 file from it and coppied it to my machine but it doesn't load X. Should I pull only a part of the XF86Config-4 file and not the whole thing? If so what parts?
Thanks,
dec.

you should have only taken the monitor part (its usually at the end of it). You need resolutions and driver stuff.

Btw, did knoppix work full screen?

Also note that knoppix is actully based on Debian Linux, so though xconfig files are VERY similar they might not be directly compatible.

Also make sure that you actually wrote to the config file on the HD from knoppix, since it uses Ramdisk, you might have to write down the configs then boot to HD and edit config file manually.

Also on RH the file is named XF86Config, there is no -4 there

Knoppix did work full screen (800x600)

I took just the bottom part of the file and just tried to fire it up, I get the error:
(EE) open /dev/fb0: No Such Device
(EE) No devices detected

Fatal server error:
No Screens Found

this is the bitch of XF86Config. you might have to manually mess around with it now.

You only really needed the bottom portion of where it talked about resolutions and screens. try searching config file and figuring out where fb0 is and what it is.

Also, the things you REALLY need are vertical and horizontal sync rates, resolutions and monitor driver module. once you have them, try running....what is it in RH....'redhat-XConfiguration'....I do not remember now, try looking around for it. then it will recreate your original config file and you'll just need to play around with monitor part of it.

Good luck. I had to run configuration utility probably 5 times untill i got it right.

(hope i am making at least some kind of sense)
