I have a brand new Toshiba Satellite s126 on which I have successfully installed Red Hat Linux 3 ES in a dual boot (bootmanager = GRUB) with Windows XP - Home.

I cannot shutdown the system from Linux - when I do, it doesn't shut down completely, then when I manually shut it down (the 15-second power-button hold), the computer will not reboot -it doesn't even start the bios to read the hard drive, cd-rom, etc. Luckily RH had heard of similar problems that were solved by removing and replacing the battery, which works.

Question is: what do I have to do to avoid being able to shut down only from Windows (which works just fine, thank you).

upgrade your kernel from 2.4.x to 2.6.x

that will most likely fix your problem

I have the same problem on my AOpen SL1545 running Fedora Core2. When I choose shutdown, Fedora shuts a lot of things down until it returns "ACPI_SHUTDOWN CALLED" (or something alike, can't remember the exact). I use kernel version 2.6.8-1.521

OK - maybe I should have mentioned I'm a newbie - can anyone tell me where to find the mentioned kernels? The latest official RH kernel is 2.4.20.

Also, called Red Hat tech support, very helpfully told me they thought the problem was in the power management for the cpu cooling fan, which isn't handled by the system, so the 'power off' part hangs right there. Said there is a non-RHN patch which handles that problem, but RH couldn't guarantee or support that. It doesn't matter, I have no idea where to get it anyway. If someone does know, that would be good information as well.

that might be your problem, of why not even the 2.6.x kernel acpi support can shutdown your computer,

i have mandrake 10 installed on a Toshiba as well, and i had that problem (it would reboot, but i didn't shutdown)...after i turned on ACPI support in lilo it started shutting down normally

Can I get an example of the files that have to be changed and or included to turn acpi on? Red Hat 3 ES.... Oh, and if I need to download something and put it somewhere, please be specific about what and where...

I think i had similar problem.
Laptop sony vaio fx 502.
mandrake 9

when rebooting system from linux, or shutting down, then powering laptop on, it halts at SONY logo, and need to power off manually, and when run again it halts at bios/keyboard error, then press f1 to resume, and ok.

upgraded to mandrake 10 community/official, and problem seems to go away.

How about visiting the Laptop's manufacturer's website and see if there
is a newer BIOS available for it? this could help fix the problem as well
if the ACPI part of the BIOS is flaky.

I had no prob shutdown like i did in 2.4 with 2.6

Unfortunately there is no new bios update, already checked.

switch to 2.6.x kernel is very easy to use the acpi,

thats right 2.6 rules
to your kernel command line append acpi=on and then try booting that. (im not too familia wiv grub)
