I have this laptop, AMD k6 366mhz, 96MB, now running win 98
it also has a Xiron PCMCIA Ethernet card that I want operational
I would like to put a linux distribution on it..., if possible...
The basic use for this laptop, will be- Homework, internet use, and a little bit of SNES emulation for when on the road (I own all the games I will be using anyways)
By the way, I am curios to if linux word processors support .doc or if there is a converter I can get easily..
I have been wanting to try linux for a while but I am not about to take my win XP computer and put it on there because, if something were to happen then I would be in trouble....
which distribution, if any, will work on this laptop?
click on kde iso's if you prefer kde, use heavygui iso's if you prefer gnome, if you want to run something that runs faster, go with xfce, that would be light gui version 0.4-1, thats what i would recommend, it comes with automatic hardware detection, boot up, if you have problems post them here if things are not working. as far as opening doc files you have some choices:
1) install openoffice (since morphix is a debian based OS you would type in the command "apt-get install openoffice.org"
2) go to sun.com and purchase staroffice, it's a free download for students
3) buy crossover office, (do a google search for crossover, the first result should be the site) when you install it, it allows you to run most windows apps, including flash mx and ms office (tried both, they both work great)
well, it really depends...; I have never used linux before...--
lets say I could choose form 3 different windows OS,
windows 95
windows 98
windows xp
I would choose 98 (on this older laptop) because I want the functionality(if that is a word) but I dont want to go too slow...
so, I want to be able to do things easily but I dont want it going slow....
By the way, I am talking about be able to run everything i need to..., with 95 on this computer alot of stuff wouldn't run without extensive upgrading......
another thing to keep in mind is that my Snes emulator goes 15/40(or so) on its current configuration.., I want it to be able to go alot faster then that....
also, I dont want to have to try one then try another..., I have dail-up and will probule be downloading this at a family members house when I get a chance....
I am looking at everything and it is between the light and the KDE, I think I am going to go with the light though...
