I have a Toshiba NB100 running Ubuntu. When I first used it the sound was working fine. I then installed 159 updates via the update manager (I think that was the number!). I now have no sound. The loudspeaker icon in the top panel has a red cross next to it. When I left click on it I get the following message: "The volume control did not find any elements and/or devices to control. This means either that you don't have the right GStreamer plug-ins installed. or that you don't have a sound card configured."

Does anyone have any idea of what I can do to remedy this problem?

I suspect your missing some important plugins for gstreamer as it has changed quite a bit. become root using su - at the terminal then run yum search gstreamer make sure all the plugins you need are installed including gstreamer-alsa and any plugins for various sound and video formats you use. If not you can use yum install. Then restart your computer
