tochiba satellite c85d linux installation problems

I bought a Toshiba Satellite c85d model psc9sc-01500w laptop.
I have tried installing fedora 16, 17 mint cinnamon, mate, debian, etc. It ends up freezing up somewhere like the login screen or just after connecting the wifi in mint. Also, it doesn't seem to have hardware acceleration so I can't use gnome 3.
I would like to stay above puppy linux in terms of footprint size.
Anybody out there have an idea?

Hi:

Just a few question so I can help you but I'm not the expert.

What has been your method to install the distro's DVD/CD, formatted USB pendrive?

Did your Toshiba come with Windows 8?

If you accidently touched the DVD/CD that can corrupt the burn of the ISO. Just re-download and re-burn if that's the case. I learned from that when I did it and had to re-install Debian.

Here is a few articles of members at Mint and Fedora with freezing-

I finally succeeded in getting centros 6 to work, although I've had an instance of the keyboard not responding in the login screen. Also, this being centros, the wifi doesn't work out of the box.
To tell the truth, this laptop is a cheap buy but it fills my need for a light word processing machine. I just wonder what os to put on it.
It came preloaded with Windows 7 but I am a Linux fan, so ...
I am seriously thinking of linux mint xfce.

I tried Linux Mint for a day and liked it.
Mint is smooth.
Don't take my word for it tho; check it out for yourself. I say that because
what disto I like you may not-

Glad centros 6 works for you!
