Thinkpad T30 cisco wifi-lan problem

I have an IBM Thinkpad T30 1.6ghz,512mb,30gb hd,interigated lan 11b,dvdrom.
Running Fedora Core 4.
Now everything is fine sound, screen res and so on.

cept for the cisco mini pci card i can't get it to work under the program in Fedora Core 4 in KDE. It shows up but the screen goes away within about 3-5 seconds. It shuts down program auto wierd huh? i can see the prog sitting in panel down bottom i think from memory.

Could this have something to do with it not having the ibm driver for it under linux?

Does anyone else here have the same laptop as me?

Also whats the best wifi wardrive apps for linux.my laptop has a cisco systems pci wireless lan adapter (11mbps not much thou 802.11b). or i have a 3com 11g card 3crwe154g72) i know they aren't much but not to bad for learning with for starters.

You should try ndiswrapper for setting up wireless lan (works in Fedora) :

http://ndiswrapper.sourceforge.net

If you have "apt" setup on your system then :

$ apt-cache search ndiswrapper

will show you all that you can install using "apt-get"

Make sure that the ndiswrapper module version that you install matches your linux kernel version (you can find this using "uname -r" ).

As i understand there are two versions. The new one has the mac address implemented in a software layer as a way to save some cents for 3com ??? At least that is what i read somewhere, sorry guys, don't remember where i read it. The older one has the mac implemented in the hardware and will work with prism54. for the new one you will have to try ndiswrapper and a windows (XP_or?) driver as i understood it.

And if there are some guy out there who succeeded installing any which version of card, please make a manual for us other newbies on this. _ The problem is that:
Yes, the info exists, but in chunks and bits everywhere,
it would be nice to have it put together . ... .am i right.

Like two simple installs for those two versions. Like f.ex you've succeeded with whatever card_version in another Distro but not in your new. Do tell us about the version/Distribution you did get to work in and .... how you did it. In a new thread if you like

It would be ever so nice.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

btw: One good resource for figuring out if a wireless card can be made to work is
http://www.linux-wlan.org/docs/wlan_adapters.html.gz

And if you want a guide for ndiswrapper you should try
http://ndiswrapper.sourceforge.net/m...p/Installation

If you're using Mandrake 10.1 be aware that it has built in the ACX100 Sourceforge Project Driver as a kernel module, you will need to remove this before install the ndiswrapper.
You will also need a copy of the windows driver, which you can get from the 3com web site, you will need to install the driver with ndiswapper.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Prism54 seems to be moving to Tuxfamily's servers.
http://prism54.org/

Supported Cards can be found here.
http://prism54.org/punbb/viewforum.php?id=1

They have three new projects.

prism54-based usb devices at:
http://jbnote.free.fr/

' islsm, by Jean Baptiste Note, which supports the new ISL3886/ISL3887-based devices (known as "newmacs" or "softmac" devices) and p54u, by Sebastien Bourdeauducq, which is the FreeBSD equivalent of islsm.' at:
http://lekernel.lya-fr.com/ (In french)

The old FullMackDriver is located at
http://svnweb.tuxfamily.org/listing....&path=%2F&sc=0

sorry i gave up using Fedora core and installed Knoppix.

I gave up because i couldn't find all other depencies for dvdcsslib. I was using YUM under Fedora core too.

so i installed knoppix.
I was told to use apt-get so i got dvdcsslib plugin and it found and install it with all the depencies.
And i still can't play dvd's. I can play em if i do live knoppix on my pc. coz i have 2 dvd drives. but this is for my laptop.
which is why i installed knoppix thinking it would play dvd's.
i don't just want linux for dvd's, i want it for wifi too and to learn.

i even installed vlc.still no luck.

i am unsure on where to add the following which says off vlc site the following.

Quote:
A fairly recent version (between 0.8.1 and 0.8.2) is packaged in Sarge. However, if you want libdvdcss (DVD decryption) support, you will need to add the following lines to your /etc/apt/sources.list:

deb http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/debian sarge main

deb-src http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/debian sarge main
I am unsure on how to find that and edit it.
