Text mode flickers

I have an hp pavilion zv5383EA laptop,

I am trying to get the reslution to 1280x800, i think the only way to do this is to install the nvidia drivers (gforce 4)

But to install, i need to exit x

when ever i exit x,the screen goes very flickery, as if my moniter can't handle the text mode reslution any more.

How do i fix this, text mode works before i load x but not after.

Thanks in advance,

One option would be to edit /etc/inittab and change the line

id:5:initdefault: (could be id:4...)
id:3:initdefault: (or 2 if id:4 above)

I can't remember which runlevels Slackware uses but this (following a reboot) should give you a text-mode login where you can install the nvidia drivers, test (with startx), etc. and then change back when done.

it is already in level 5, that is not a problem,

it is only after X has closed, the screen goes flickery as if the monitor cannot handle the screen resulution. (wich it should as it started up ok!!!)
