Hi,

I'm trying to install a version of Linux (DSL or Knoppixs etc) on a Tecra 8000 laptop, without a CD rom drive. I managed to rig a external drive out of a USB hard drive enclosure, but cannot boot from it. Currently, the laptop boots from a floppy drive, putting it in DOS. I have updated the BIOS, and tried loadlin without success. The laptop has a 1GB HD, but I am unsure of the RAM or Processor, they're probably pretty poor as well. There is no network port, but a USB, Parallel, Modem, and serial ports.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Ive made a little more progress...

I did a poor man's install of dsl linux, and it boots until it says:

...
Uisng Xvesa default 1024x768x32 -mouse "/dev/psaux" mouse
xauth: creating new authority file /home/dsl/.Xauthority
xauth: creating new authority file /home/dsl/.Xauthority

then it freezes...

sometimes it will return to the command line mode, if i boot with the phrase dsl xsetup or lowram etc.

any ideas?
