System speed on Dell Latitude with Fedora

I am a relatively new Linux user and I recently installed Fedora Core 3 onto a '99 Dell Latitude pentium II laptop PC. All is now working quite well, yet extremely slow. Does anyone know a way how to increase system speed by modifying software or settings. Someone already suggested changing window manager, but I don't know how to. Can anyone help me - thanks in advance

What are the specs of the laptop. If it's a PII, it might be a little slow if all the bells + whistles of Fedora Core 3 have been installed. Did you just do the default install? You might want to have a look at what extra packages you have installed that you don't need, and turn of things like the Apache webserver, MySQl server, Samba server, etc. as you may well have a load of network services running in the background that you don't really need. As for changing window managers, when you have your login screen, there should be an option for 'Session' which lets you choose different window managers. KDE + Gnome are the two most common, but also slow and use up a lot of resources. Smaller window managers such as Fluxbox, XFCE and Enlightenment as much quicker, though take more configuring to get working as you want. The software installation menu for Fedora should let you install some of these and let you use them.
