Suse Pro Can't run 3D as normal, only logged in as root Used to work. What did I do?

Suse 9.0 Pro

I had 3D capibility. Now suddenly it's gone. As root it works but as my normal account it doesn't. I reset it using YaST (a bunch of times, restarting the machine every time) but it doesn't take. I recently added myself to a new group for something else. What did I do and how do I get 3D back for normal user me? I am assuming this is somehow security related and I messed up something. I am just learning this stuff and have been doing well until now.

Weird!

Have you tried running 3Ddiag (a diagnostic utility written by SuSE) as both a normal user and root and comparing the output - they should be the same. It might be related to the group change, but that sounds like a bit of a red herring. Also try running glxgears and report back with the error messages (as a normal user).

Good luck!

Jb.

Well how about that

Turns out my color depth was too high. It was 24 bit but I guess 3D requires no higher then 16. Thanks for the 3Ddiag tip.

Just checked it and it still doesn't work. 3Ddiag is the same in root and user but glgears says:

libGL error: failed to open DRM: Operation not permitted
libGL error: reverting to (slow) indirect rendering

as normal user but not as root. As root it works and just says "disabling TCL support".

YaST says 3d is enabled and configured but the games says it is not as normal user.

Hi Min,

I'm running Mandrake 10 on (at the moment) 2.4.21-0.13mdkcustom kernel.

I am having exactly the same sort of problem as you, with a Hercules Prophet 64MB 4500 KYRO II card.

I have tried setting DRI section, in XF86Config-4, to Mode 0666 to no avail, however this may work for you.

Have you resolved the issue yet, or still looking?

Good luck

Jon
