Unhappy SuSE 9.0 installed on a Dell Inspiron 1100-NEWBIE

We are new to SuSE and have just dual boot installed onto our new Dell Inspiron 1100 laptop. Only to find out that this BIOS version (A25) doesn't vary the Video RAM and therefore we are stuck with a tiny window.

There is so much great information out here, but we really need simple, step-by-step instructions for people that aren't used to 'make' and compile, etc.

If there is a solution to this problem, could someone please direct us? Thanks in advance...

From Thomas Pfau's site:

http://nbpfaus.net/~pfau/inspiron.html

"Apparently, the BIOS only allocates 1MB of RAM to the video card on boot.

XFree86 can allocate more RAM to the card but can't tell the BIOS it did so. Therefore, the BIOS won't enable modes requiring more video RAM. There's a utility available (and a better description of the problem) at

http://www.chzsoft.com.ar/855patch.html

that takes care of this. I invoke this utility at boot time with '845patch 16384' which allocates 16MB to the video card. I run X at 1024x768x24 successfully with this setting..."

Sounds simple to me...

Thanks. I did get and install the patch, but obviously there is more I need to do that I don't understand how to do since we are so new to SuSE.

Did you go here?

Otherwise I would recommend emailing Mr. Zietz, he should be able to walk you through it.
