SUSE 9.0 and acpi...

I have a two laptops (Toshiba 5005-S507 and Toshiba 5205-S703) that require acpi so that not only the laptop functions work, but also for sound to work. Without acpi, I have no sound to use for playing any kind of audio (with RealPlayer, MPlayer, XMMS, etc.), nor is there sound for games (Frozen Bubble).

When I have acpi=on, and have audio, then I open up anything multi-media (RealPlayer, etc. or Frozen Bubble), everything freezes up, even the cursor with the touchpad. Then I have to push the Power button off, then back on and edit GRUB with acpi=off, but of course then there is no sound or laptop functions.

After paying for SUSE 9.0 Professional, I later find out through SUSE support that support does not include Nvidia card issues, nor acpi issues.

Does anyone here have a solution with easy-to-follow,thorough, and nontechie steps of how to solve the acpi problem.

In advance, thanks!

Richard L.

Nobody does support Nvidia, because Nvidia has its own drivers in linux.

You find Nvidia for suse 9.0 on

Comes like a rpm and you can install it with yast.

CB
Be sure that you save them because if you update somtimes you have to install the drivers again.

CloudBuilder,

Thanks for your quick response, and I appreciate your input. I was already aware of the Nvidia license issue and that I might need to download the driver for 3D acceleration in case the one that comes with SUSE updates does not work.

My main problem is ACPI. I hope that someone can help me with a fully functional ACPI without the freeze ups.

Thanks once again, CloudBuilder.

Hello Richard,

I had the same troubles with a Fujitsu laptop. Sometimes those laptops have also amp and not everything is working. There are also lacks in the way linux is supporting ACPI. I used redhat, but that did not work at all. Suse 9.0 worked on one system, but on one (desktop) system with an a7n8x-x (Asus)mobo I had to put of ACPI, it would not install.

The next link can possible help you to a work around

http://www.linux-laptop.net/

There is at least one example of your Toshiba with a how-to use acpi.

Perhaps this can help you!

Whoohoo! Another 5005-s507 user! Hey buddy! I got the same problem Your processor is throttling down to 50%, 40% and less performace due to some bugs. I've sent off a support request to suse for it, have you done that yet? Let em know we satellite users got a problem :-D

And ah, cloudbuilder? Suse alreay has full acpi and toshiba support built in, and enabled the moment of install on a toshiba laptop..

Oh, if you want your laptop to run/play nice in the mean-time. With no sound. Here's what you do.

First, run yast, go into hardware. Sound, and delete your sound card, this will prevent it from interfering with the system when you boot up.

Second, head into the "System" tab of yast, etc your configuration files, and go into the powermanagement section of acpi, adjust the values to suit your needs, I changed a bunch of the defaults to be more tolerant of heat, and so that it would wait longer before throttling down the system to minimum.

Thanks Caeda for your very helpful reply. Can you kindly reply with the values you chose for powermanagement? I'm not sure what values to put in.

I will definitely send a support request to SUSE. What should I tell them exactly?
I don't want to mess up the request by not being on target and specific enough as I am a "nontechie".

By deleting the sound card, this will result in a "Catch 22" situation, where I will not have any sound to play CD's, DVD's Frozen Bubble with sound, and music on the internet. This really *cripples* a lot of what I like to do. Yet when I try these things with acpi=on and sound working, all these things freeze up, even the mouse/touchpad cursor.

I appreciate your help. Please advice on the two requests above.

Sincerely,

Richard L.

Well, I'm just suggesting no sound card till it gets working again because, well, then you don't have to deal with things freezing up. And as for the values, depends how much you use the computer. Maybe you want the % of idleness to be 10% higher than default, and the return to full power to be 5% lower... its all up to you Today I tried fixing the sound several methods, ended up killing everything and have to re-install from scratch now..

Alright. It's all fixed. And here's how.

Went to suse.com. Into the downloads and mirrors. Picked a mirror. 8.2 distribution. Downloaded k_deflt-2.4.20-62.i586.rpm and put it in my home directory.

Opened a Konsole window.

Type "su" and enter your root password.
type "rpm -Uvh --oldpackage k_deflt-2.4.20-62.i586.rpm"
Wait for install to complete.
type "cd /boot"
type "rm initrd"
type "mv initrd.shipped initrd"
Reboot.
System should work normally with all features and sound now working as wonderfully as it did in 8.2 Happy thanksgiving to all!

Edit ***

After I was done fixing my system. I also sent off a nice nasty email to SuSE telling them what I thought of their "support" and the fact that they didnt even bother to release a simple Kernel Update in yast for toshiba and other users experiancing loss of sound with the update.

Edit 2 ***

The Plot thickens! They've now released a kernel patch/bug fix! Its 195MB!.. and it TOTALLY SCREWS OVER THE SYSTEM... so don't go installing it.. heh...

Ah, and just so you can have nvidia graphics when your done with the kernel downgrade. You'll want to download the Nvidia 4486.run file from the nvidia site. Then...

konsole... and these commands, one at a time, in the following order.

"su" "your password" "telinit 3" wait for it to go to runlevel 3... login as root again... "export IGNORE_CC_MISMATCH=yes" "sh NVIDIA*"

Then follow the instructions and it will compile its own driver and install it for you. Then you can use sax2 to set it all up again.

Enjoy!

whoops.. forgot to mention you also need to download and install kernel-source 2.4.20 rpm...! that's for compiling the nvidia drivers!

Toshiba 5205-S705

I am having the sound problem as well. I will try to downgrade the Kernel as you have listed. One other problem I am having is that if I do not have the laptop plugged in, the acpi will change the laptop screen darker. WAY TO DARK. There is no way I can find to brighten the screen back up. They only way I can fix it is when I boot up make sure it is plugged in until KDE is up and running and then I can unplug it and it will not decrease the screen brightness. Are you having this problem as well? If so what are you doing to correct it? Thanks for your input.

So exactly what sequence should the install be? I tried your other post on the fix and I could not go into x. I am sure that is related to my video card not being setup as you have in this post.

Thanks for the info.
