Hi there. First time Linux user. Bought a shiney new book on the subject that came with a SUSE 10.0 install DVD. The system boots from the CD, but it won't install with either normal, ACPI disabled, or with the safe settings. It loads the kernel, but then it just comes up with a blank black screen .
I can, however, get something to happen when I try to install in text mode...only problem is all that gives me a big list of system info and I really don't know what to do with that. Running an AMD 64 ML-32 processor and have an existing windowsXP OS. Any Ideas? Thanx.
Aha! There is a 64-bit version on my disk, but it wont seem to load from that. I loaded it in 32-bit mode (don't know why i didnt try that earlier) and it works. Thanks a bunch.
Everything works nicely until i try to repartition my hard disk. I get a scary error message popup: "system error code: -3027...failed during shrinking parition /dev/hda1 to 33.5 GB" Help? Thanx again.
Does hard drive have rescue partition at beginning and a restore partion at end? (Do you have latest BIOS?)If so Lilo or Grub to mbr can cause problem with initial partition. Linux can be installed in partition in middle of HD(you have to make free space/resize main XP partition).See how tricky it can be? Boot floppy or CD may be needed/safer.
Do you have XP install cds with SP2(available from hp)--not system restore DVD? Having these is best. You have a right to them since you have licensed copy of XP. Some people wipe hd and do clean XP install with these cds then install Linux in avaiable space. Then Lilo/Grub to mbr is no problem.
Using restore DVD or partition will restore system to pre-Linux state.
Good luck.
Just a thought, would the windows filesystem be ntfs, by any chance? AFAIK linux installers can't resize ntfs partitions. I always end up having to use 3rd-party partitioning tools to resize the partition from windows, then install linux. Not sure about recent developments though, perhaps the guys have come up with ways to resize ntfs from the linux installers.
Hi guys,
I also meet problems to install SUSE 10 on my hp dv5000 (AMD Thurion 64 M). I have resized the windows partition and created new ones fo linux. When I boot from the instalation CD I have exactly the same problem like the RyRyH. I got a blanck display and the computer is not responding to any keyboard commands. The procesor indicator is off, i.e. it is not working. I don't know where could be the problem. Yes, I do use the amd 64 distribution.
I couldn't make it proceed. May be some more restraints? Or there is no way for the cernel to recognize the HP hradware? I don't know, I'm my knowledge in this part of the instalation is very very basic.
Yes, I tried. In Installation - secure mode this option is provided along with bunch of other features disabled. Do I need to provide some drivers during the installation? This option exists but only with floppy, which I don't have on my notebook. Is would sound may be stupid, but is it possible instead of floppy drive to use the USB somehow?
Perhaps you could try what RyRyh did and use 32-bit install cds. There might be some issues with turion and the 64-bit editions, but i can't confirm that.
Edit: no, there should be no need to provide additional drivers, the default kernel should have all you need.
It is true that the 64 bit distributions are recently developing and might have some issues with turion 64. But what would be the disadvantages of installing 32-bit on 64-bit machine?
Do you have any idea by chance which other 64 linux distro shouldn't have problems. I just burned the Debian AMD64 distribution.
Great tip iso1. I have a Compaq Presario v5000 with an AMD Turion64 cpu. I was reluctant to install the 32-bit OS, your suggestion of adding "noapic nolapic" as a boot option worked a treat. Many thanks!
However, I'm having a big troubles making my wireless running. I tried tons of 64 bit drivers for my Broadcom 802.11 a/b/g integrated wireless card and none of them worked when I used ndiswrapper. They just get installed without detecting the card. If I install the 32 bit driver the output from
ndiswrapper -l gives driver installed, device detected. But of course, it is 32 bit and there is no chance to work on 64 bit OS. I'm getting desperate, and my last action would be to install the 32 bit SUSE. I just can't make my wireless card work.
If any one has suggestions, what a twist I could use, I'd appreciate a lot. For the last two weeks I went trough almost all linux forums reading for solution. Is there anyone with the same laptop/wireless card experiencing the same problem?
