Speaker problems on laptop.

Hey guys, I recently got my Ubuntu 7.04 disk by mail and decided to install it on my Gateway 7320 Laptop. Everything is fine, except the speakers... Now, I'm very new to Linux and I really don't know what to do. I've been told to do alsaconfig but this distro doesn't have that command. I don't know how to install programs very well on Linux. I've opened the mixer and raised every single thing there is on it, but no sound. Any suggestions please?

In principle all these files should be owned by "your user name".

can you post
$ cat /etc/group
$ cat /etc/passwd
$ id

And tell me which user name you are trying to login. If your name is NOT in group audio or video add it suitably .
