speaker and headphone play together

I am using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS in my Lenevo G460 laptop;
The problem is that my speaker doesnt stops on plugging the headphone; i.e., both headphone and speakers work at the same time;

I tried each and every hints given in previous discussions but its of no help;

I have the same problem. a work around is to open your mixer software and lower the volume of the speakers. But I'd really like to know another way. I know my laptop under Windows automatically pops up a window when I plug in a set of headphones or mic.

Upgrading the kernel to 2.6.38 and an additional text edit fixed that for me. See-
