Sony Vaio + Ubuntu + Nvidia
Checked all similar Treads, with similar problems - solution did not suit yet.
I have a Sony Vaio dual boot with Windows-7 and Ubuntu-9.10. Was working fine.
Tried to upgrade to Ubuntu-10.04. The screen went blank. Tried one of the solutions given in Ubuntu forums - (modifying Xorg.Conf file and adding a edid "bin" file). This solution worked fine - till I did an update of Ubuntu-10.04 today (both security and recommended updates)
Blank screen again. I have tried almost all solutions - but nothing works, The screen goes blank and does not even show the splash screen.
The only other option is to go back to Ubuntu-9.10 - which I am reluctant. So, please suggest something viable! Thanks in advance.

What model VAIO are you using?
Im using the new E-Series and have multiple hardware issues because it is quite new. Managed to eventually get 10.4 working quite nicely though, except the wireless is very unstable.

Mine is CW-Series, bought in Feb-2010.
With Ubuntu 9.10 - all functions were working- except perhaps external monitor. Hope I can get 10.04 working - because it is working very well on my desktop.

Are you sure you configured your Xorg correctly? Also have the correct EDID file? Because I have a vaio with nvidia GPU too and the very same problem. My VPCF112FX works well with 64bit 10.04 and the Xorg EDID workaround.
edit: my whole xorg.conf
Code:
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
DefaultDepth 24
Device "Default Device"
Option "metamodes" "nvidia-auto-select +0+0"
Option "ConnectedMonitor" "DFP-0,DFP-1,CRT"
Option "CustomEDID" "DFP-0:/etc/X11/vpcfmonitor.raw"
EndSection
Section "Module"
Load "glx"
EndSection
Section "Device"
Identifier "Default Device"
Driver "nvidia"
Option "NoLogo" "True"
EndSection

Can you please give a step by step instruction on the Xorg EDID workaround?
Thanks

1- Get the EDID of your laptop's display. It is data structure that can be exported by using some windows tools. I don't remember the tool I used but you can quickly find one with a web search.
2- Export your EDID to a file, I named mine vpcfmonitor.raw
3- Backup your /etc/X11/xorg.conf(if you have any) and edit the file to include the lines I have(in my previous post). Make sure you typed the path and name of your EDID file correctly. In my case, it is /etc/X11/vpcfmonitor.raw
4- Reboot and see if it works.
Good luck
