Sony Vaio PCGK 74

I am about to buy a Sony Vaio PCKG74 notebook (http://www.sony.com.au/support/produ...tedProd=PCGK74) and am kinda scared as to whether OpenBSD will run on this or not.

I have checked http://monkey.org/openbsd-mobile/

Also, googled for sony+vaio+pcgk74+openbsd & sony+vaio+pcgk74+unix but it didn't give me back anything.

I have looked at the hardware configuration and things that are worrying me most are:

Memory Stick Direct Slot (MS PRO)

Modem:V.90/V.92/K56flex compliant

Audio:Windows® Sound System compatible, AC97 compliant, Software MIDI sound generator, Stereo speakers

Battery:PCGABP2NY Lithium-ion battery/ Up to 3.0 hours of use with supplied lithium-ion battery (estimated; actual battery life may vary by usage)

Wifi.

If anyone of you have used or know about this laptop's compatibility w/ OpenBSD please let me know.

Any kind of other suggestion is also welcome.

TIA.

hello Tia,

I have a pcg-k74. I think it's not available everywhere (only in parts of europe and in australia as far as I have read). I'm from Perth, Australia. Now I am a Linux newbie, so don't treat everything I say too strictly; I'm only talking from limited experience.

Ok, I have tried several Linux installations: RH7, RH9, Knoppix 3.3 and Knoppix 3.4. My ultimate goal was to try and get my Netgear WG511 up and running. I still haven't been able to. I like Linux a lot and would love to be able to say that I am all-Linux, but so far I'm struggling. If you're a newbie like myself, it might be a bit demanding to pick the pcg-k74, but you learn heaps by trying. I would say that your first Linux experience would have to be with Knoppix. Boots off cd, usually detects everything for you and configures the system. Try it, play with the hardware (burn cds, try your network, modem, music etc...) If it works, install it to hard drive so you can dual-boot XP and Knoppix. It has all the functionality you could wish from Linux to start.

Hint: I stuffed up the vaio so many times, but thank goodness for the vaio recovery disk. It would also be handy to have a partitioning program (I used partition magic 8) if you wanna dual-boot

Things I have yet to get working: wireless LAN Netgear wg511 and my modem
Good luck if you get started
D'oh! if you find any of my advice useless and "retard"

QTparted - DragonflyBSD

Hey guys,

Looks like I'm up the same creek as you I've been trying to get my Linksys notebook card to work with Linux - hell of alot different than M$, huh? hahaha Anyway, Knoppix has a package called QTParted in the K > System pop out menu. It's supposed to be alot like partition magic if you want to give it a shot. I just used it yesterday to make a swap partition for Knoppix and it does the job.

As far as BSD running on your laptop, I was looking at DragonflyBSD (based on FreeBSD) that can be run as a live cd as well. I know you are looking for OpenBSD, but maybe that might help. Good luck
