Sony VAIO - Intel WiFi Link 1000 BGN - Linux Mint 13 - Wireless not working

I got a new VAIO laptop, installed Mint (Cinnamon) and haven't been able to get wireless.

I'm wondering how far back in Ubuntu versions I will need to go to get a working version of Linux on this laptop.

The wifi card is the one in the subject line.

if someone would be able to help you they would need some more info. this should be a good start:
Code:
echo uname: && uname -a -m -p && echo lspci: && lspci && echo lsusb: && lsusb && echo lsmod: && lsmod && echo ifconfig: && ifconfig && echo ifconfig -a: && ifconfig -a && echo iwconfig: && iwconfig && echo resolv.conf: && cat /etc/resolv.conf && echo route: && route -n
please provide the output of the above commands between code tags.

^ seems your output is incomplete ?

from what i can see your wireless adapter is identified.

does:
Code:
sudo ifconfig wlan0 up
do anything ?

Trying this again. I ran sudo ifconfig wlan0 up, rebooted, still cannot get the wireless to turn on. In the Network Settings Wireless section there is an On/Off toggle. It is Off. Clicking to turn it on jumps immediately back to Off.

The output below is after doing 'sudo ifconfig wlan0 up'.

Code:

Next trying SUSE with this machine - still no wireless

Here are the answers to the earlier question, now with a SUSE install. Thought I'd try it since I had a DVD from a conference. Since it is a new machine I don't really care which version, but I'd like a Linux on here. I have 3 laptops (2 older Dell, 1 Acer netbook) with Ubuntu, and I put SUSE on a friend's HP without any problems. Looking around the web there seems to be a problem with this Intel Wifi device and Linux.

I had heard good things about Mint so wanted to try it, but I'll stick with whatever I can get to work first.

Thanks for your help.

seems like the hardware switch is messing with stuff (not sure why manufacturers include those).

can you please show this:
Code:
ifconfig # before picture
sudo ifconfig wlan0 up # turns on the wifi adapter. does the light on the button turn on ?
ifconfig # after picture
do not reboot between these steps becuz i think it will reset and be harder to diagnose.

edit: i think the rfkill command was designed to help with this issue. try:
Code:
rfkill list
sudo rfkill unblock all

Thanks again. The ifconfig wlan0 up command did turn the light on. Below is the output of the commands. Still can't turn on the wifi. I see the rfkill didn't change the only block that was 'yes'--acer-wireless Soft blocked = yes.

i never had to deal with rfkill before (why does it list 3 wireless devices ?) but this concerns me:

also, since the ifconfig output lists the wlan0 adapter as being available, try running:
Code:
sudo iwlist wlan0 scan

When I looked at ifconfig again, it didn't show wlan0. I did the ifconfig wlan0 up, then ran the iwlist command, and did get output this time:

Here's what happens:
- ifconfig wlan0 up
--> ifconfig shows wlan0
--> iwlist wlan0 scanning reports networks
- Go to Networking Interface, click on Enable wireless
--> ifconfig no longer shows wlan0

hmm, maybe the network manager applet is fubar ? have you tried connecting via the commandline:
Code:
sudo ifconfig device up
iwconfig
sudo iwlist device scan
sudo iwconfig device essid "your network name"
sudo dhclient # will attempt to get ip-address, subnet mask, dns server information automatically from your router assuming dhcp is turned on on your router.

After doing the iwconfig wlan0 essid "BellCoho Network" command, that network did then appear associated with wlan0 with the iwconfig. (This network requires authentication. I don't know where that would come in.) ifconfig does not yet show an ip address for wlan0.

Code:

I'm going back and forth between Mint and SUSE to see which I can get to work.

Back on Mint...I redid the last series of commands. Now using the command-line configuration I have a connection that shows an inet6 address, but no inet. When I unplug the wired connection I'm disconnected.

The wireless light is blinking, and it is showing packets transmitting and being received.

Code:
steve@steve-VIAO ~ $ ifconfig
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 78:84:3c:ac:17:a4

I'm not sure if the dhclient command is working, and these are just suggestions, or if it failed. I'll look up the suggestions it is making.

Code:
sudo dhclient
Rather than invoking init scripts through /etc/init.d, use the service(8)
utility, e.g. service smbd reload

Since the script you are attempting to invoke has been converted to an
Upstart job, you may also use the reload(8) utility, e.g. reload smbd
