Garfield (help - please??)
Hi Linux users ;)
Garfield can you do me a favour and send me the: ipw3945-kmdl-2.6.16-1.2080_FC5smp-0.0.74-4.rhfc5.at.i686.rpm ieee80211-kmdl-2.6.16-1.2080_FC5smp-1.1.13-10.rhfc5.at.i686.rpm Files as I have looked in serach engines and have been trying to get this ndiswraper to work but it does not... Your post should work as I've been trying for 2 days now LOL... I'm a n00b to Linux and I have to learn about it in a college course I'm doing so I installed FC5 on my laptop (medion cybermaxx - intel pentium 4 3.2 GhZ, 512 mb ram, ati mobility radeon) and it works, I just want my pcmcia wireless card to pick up my wireless router downstairs..... I have widnows xp installed and it works fine (obviously), I have searched all over but it's always the FC3-4 crap.... Would you mind sending the above files to my e-mail address (doomdark89@hotmail.com) please I have gotten the kernel ones up tp now I'm just looking for them and I can't find them :( Thanks garfield ;) Regards, Samuel, p.s I have tried this ndiswrapper lark, It doesn't work.... I have wireless that works on my xp partition, but I obviously don't have an internet connection on FC5 as I only have wireless (I could get a straight-through cable to connect to my wireless box) but I don't want to do that..... I want to use it in my room out the way so I can learn a bit more about linux + have internet connection! Thanks again Garfield ;) |
Should I download this:
ipw3945-kmdl-2.6.16-1.2122_FC5smp-1.0.0-5.rhfc5.at.i686.rpm instead of this??? ipw3945-kmdl-2.6.16-1.2080_FC5smp-0.0.74-4.rhfc5.at.i686.rpm I also downloaded the latest versions of the kernel ect! -2.6.16-1.2122 thats the ones I'm downloading... Will it still work???? I have found the other one... ieee80211-kmdl-2.6.16-1.2122_FC5smp-1.1.13-10.rhfc5.at.i686.rpm instead of this???? ipw3945-kmdl-2.6.16-1.2080_FC5smp-0.0.74-4.rhfc5.at.i686.rpm regards, samuel ;) p.s THIS MIGHT HELP THE REST OF YOU!!! I HOPE THE 2.6.16-1.2122 works though! it's on that http://atrpms.net/dist/fc5/ PLEASE CLARIFY THAT IT WORKS THOUGH GARFIELD!! HERE IS A REVISED LIST THAT SHOULD WORK>>>> install the following rpms and reboot ur system kernel-smp-2.6.16-1.2122_FC5.i686.rpm kernel-smp-devel-2.6.16-1.2122_FC5.i686.rpm kernel-kdump-devel-2.6.16-1.2111_FC5.i686.rpm Once done with it, install the following rpms- ieee80211-1.1.13-10.rhfc5.at.i386.rpm ieee80211-kernheaders-1.1.13-10.rhfc5.at.i386.rpm ieee80211-kmdl-2.6.16-1.2122_FC5smp-1.1.13-10.rhfc5.at.i686.rpm ipw3945-1.0.0-5.rhfc5.at.i386.rpm ipw3945d-1.7.18-1.at.i386.rpm ipw3945-firmware-1.13-1.noarch.rpm ipw3945-kmdl-2.6.16-1.2122_FC5smp-1.0.0-5.rhfc5.at.i686.rpm ipw3945-ucode-1.13-1.at.noarch.rpm now reboot ur system .... |

since they worked for me on kernel version 2.6.16-2080 so any later version it will definitly work ... Ndiswrapper didnt work for me either but i have found out that it mainly is good with broadcom, DLink, linksys wireless cards ... also while installing ur device drivers its better not to use the drivers given by the manufacturer... sometimes they overwrite or reimplement some of the library functions which may nt be desired ... since work on fedora core project is fast ... wait for their appropriate rpm to be released compatible to the OS released... (spl with INTEL cards) i hope FC6 comes with default support for ipw3945abg wireless drivers... |
if u guys need i ll keep all the rpms i used as an archive on my blog asap ... so u can download and use them... let me knw ...

spent SO long trying to get my wireless working til i found this. thank you!!
i'm not quite there yet though. i've followed everything you posted (although with updated rpms). but when i go to activate the connection i get this error message: Code:
Determining IP information for eth1... failed; no link present. Check cable? now, i'm very much a newbie to both linux & networking. but i followed everything you posted and put in the correct rpms for my architecture (also dual core). the lsmod & ps checks show everything running smoothly so can then assume that the problem doesn't lie with the driver installation? its a dhcp connection & i set the mode to 'managed' and the ssid to 'Auto'. i'm thinking its just a problem with my configuration and not with the driver installation, in which case its off topic and i'll go elsewhere to find a solution. but i thought i'd better ask just in case. also, did you manage to figure out a way to load the module at startup? thanks again, rob |

well network manager doesnt work though it will detect automatically but it will keep giving u above warning even if u enter the correct WEP keys.... anyways ... do this ... #depmod -a #modprobe ipw3945 if ur ipw3945d is not running ..start it #/sbin/ipw3945d #ifconfig eth1 up #iwconfig eth1 essid "your essid" #iwconfig eth1 key "your key" #dhclient eth1 thts it .. it should get started and u can connect nw to internet ... this is a manual method u have to do ... so far for automatic starting and ddetecting hp dv5100 series laptop has given some problems ... best thing is u write all these into a script and run it ... |
best is install Suse 10.1 linux distro i have felt in love with it ... recently started using it ... Its the first distro i have seen with such good hardware detection and support ... it has detected each and every piece of hw on my laptop HP dv5100 laptop ... even it has default supp for intel ipw3935 abg wireless card we neednot install anything ... kewl..........
|
further investigation suggests that the radio isn't turned on. i'm on an acer travelmate 4202 and so it looks like i need to install acerhk which will let me control the wireless switch. i was having trouble installing it yesterday (invalid argument error when i used modprobe) but when i get back this evening hopefully i can get it up and running.
cheers |
if it works let us knw ... whtis acerhk ... is thr anything similar fr HP laptops
|
believe me Suse 10.1 linux is the best distro ever wonderful hardware detection and support ... it detected every damn piece of my hardware and had automatically installed drivers for my latest intel 3945 abg card which no other distro could do and i had to struggle a lot to make it work ...
but since i installed Suse it workd like a charm and i didnt had to install anything else to make any thing work ... I too had tried this in fedora in my previuos posts and given the steps... even network manager works with Suse + automatically starts with boot ... thts kool |
i may well do that alright. gonna see how i get on with this acerhk thing first but so far FC5 seems very heavy. if i have many other problems i'll probly end up changing. too much of my time has been devoted to getting stuff working already! acerhk stands for Acer Hot Key and its a driver to get the hot keys for mail/internet/wireless(and hopefully bluetooth), which are on acer laptops, working. i don't know any other way to get the radio switched on so i'm hoping i can install it!
no idea if there is anything similar for HPs. |
well i have found out ... in HP laptops there is a separate hw switch which can be pressed to start/stop the wireless radio ... and once i press it to start and saw the LED glow ... my network manager started working fr the first time and connect automatically without any trouble... in HP we neednot install any separate sw fr that....

Thanks for the help, after days of beating my head against this T60p the wifi finally works.
Now that it's working though, I only show one CPU when it use to come up as two. It's an Intel Centrino Duo -- I read somewhere that the ieee80211 would only work with one CPU, did the RPM automatically put me in single mode, or...? |
Intel PRO Set Wireless Adapter
G'day all,
I have installed Fedora Core 5 on my laptop and can't get past th 'udev' stage on boot. I have seen the solutions posted on this site but, being quite new at this game, (you could say I'm a pure bred, dyed in the wool open source mug), I can't see how to install the updated Kernel files or the necessary rpms if I can't get the operating system past the 'udev' hang. Would someone take pity on me please. Pieter (Groucho) Noom |
