sleep and hibernate not working on ThinkPad T60 with Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon)

Hi,
I have recently purchased a Lenovo ThinkPad T60 2007FUG,
and have installed Ubuntu 7.10 on it. (I have installed the
properietary driver for ATI Mobility Radeon X1400.)

Most things seems to work properly.

But sleep [Fn+F4] as in suspend to RAM and hibernate [Fn+F12]
as in suspend to disk don't work.

The screen goes blank, the suspend light (a half moon) turns on and
off continuously, and the fan is on. And the system stays locked in this
mode.

I have tried some of the suggestion I have found on ThinkWiki
(www.thinkwiki.org), without result. (I have tried to the following
during suspend:
- disable powernowd,
- unload the IPW3945 module and
- disable video card warm boot.)

But I don't find a more general strategy for solving these problems.
It is also hard to find information on how these mechanism work in
Linux and Ubuntu.

Does anyone have any specific suggestions I can try? Or some more
genereal advices?

Where can I find information relevant for solving these problems?

Any help is much appreciated?
Regards
CB

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but there is an issue with the fglrx (ati proprietary) and the newer kernel configuration.

See here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...22/+bug/121653

and here:

http://www.phoronix.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5302

I have a z61m with the same graphics chipset. I tried out fedora 7 for a few days and ran into the same problem.

One solution is to recompile the kernel with CONFIG_SLAB=y, but then the restricted modules won't work, and you'd have to rebuild the fglrx and ipw3945 modules to get wireless and graphics.

Another solution (which is what I did because I wasn't in the mood to rebuild stuff) is to use Ubuntu feisty until ati fixes the driver. I have found ubuntu feisty to work with minimal effort.

Thank you for your highly informative reply.

As I understand, besides the suspend mechanism
found in the kernel, at least two other suspend
utilities exist (TuxOnIce and the one operating
in user space).

Will installing and using one of these two
alternatives solve the problem?

TuxOnIce *should* work, as it is different than regular suspend. You will only have hibernate, and not suspend to ram.

I read the thread refered to by petespin27 above (on launchpad.net),
where they discuss possible solutions to the problem.

However nobody suggests using userspace suspend (s2ram/s2disk).
Can anybody confirm if this is working with the fglrx driver
and the new kernel?
