Slackware 12.0 install hangs at mysql package

Hello. Trying to install Slackware 12.0 onto a Compaq Evo N610c. 2.4 P4. 512 MB RAM, 40 Gig HD

I set up a 1024 swap partition.

Selected to install packages, leaving out the kernel source (I'm not a programmer), kde environment, games, and emacs.

Everything seems to work ok, but when the install reaches the mysql package the laptop just shuts down entirely. Ideas?

Have you checked th md5 sums of your disk image? Though, a spurious reboot usually indicates a memory problem...

Sorry, not sure what that means...How do I check the md5 sums?

And if its a mem issue, why does it hang in the same place every time (I followed these same steps twice with the same result)

Well, twice is not really every time :) but OK, I agree, a bad disk might be the prime suspect.
When you dowload disk images (or even packages) from the internet, you should check that the dowloaded file haven't got damaged in transit. The program to use is called md5sum It's man page is pretty much self-explanatory. The site you downloaded the disk image from, should have the md5sum of the image published somewhere (usually on the same page). It's a number in hex they obtained for their image. You compute the md5 sum of the image you downloaded and compare it against their number. If the numbers match, there's a good chance that the file you dowloaded is not corrupted.
Also, it might be a bad disk burn. Or, overheating. Start by checking the image. Good luck!

I've used the discs before successfully...does that matter?

md5sum ran ok
