Slackware 10.1 on Dell INSPIRON 600m == no sound

I just installed SLackware 10.1 (KDE as Desktop enviornment), and I have no sound at all. I'm running on an Inspiron 600m. Does anyone know how I can begin to diagnose this problem? This is my first Linux distro.

Possible solution

-Add the following line in /etc/hotplug/blacklist

snd-intel8x0m

-After that run alsaconf. Finish the process

-Run alsamixer configure your channels
the letter mm at the bottom means channel is
muted hit -m- to unmute and use your arrow keys
to move sides and lower-higher volumes

-After that run alsactl store as root

That should do it. Let us know

When I run alsaconf, I am presented with two sound cards: intel and legacy. I choose intel, and the program finisshes its execution. Here is what happens when I try to run alsamixer:

bash-3.00# alsamixer
No mixer elems found

There is still no sound on my laptop. Do you know what this no elems message means?

Try "alsamixer -c 1" If that gives you the mixer window, then check to see that you typed "snd-intel8x0m" correctly into the file /etc/hotplug/blacklist. If it still gives you "No mixer elems found", then run alsaconf again.

I made sure the spelling of the sound card in the file is correct. I ran alsaconf again, then I get the following error when attempting to run alsamixer:

bash-3.00# alsamixer -c 1

alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for hw:1: No such device

Don't know what I should do. Any ideas? Thanks.

I do not know what else it could be. It sounds as though the modem driver (snd-intel8x0m) is being loaded instead of the sound driver (snd-intel8x0). What is the output of lsmod?

run: whereis alsa

post output.
