Shutting Laptop Lid Scrambles Video -Driver Problem?

I am running Redhat 9 on a Dell latitude D600 (1.6centrino, 512 ram, radeon mobility 9000, 1400x1050res) and I have a problem with the monitor. Whenever I close the lid on my laptop (Akin to simply turning off the monitor on a desktop) and open it back up again, the video is all scrambled: There is only about a 1400x200 pixel area at the top of scrambled lines, and the rest of the screen is simply blank. My first thought was that this may be a video problem, since I heard Radeon did not have linux drivers yet for my series of cards. But in my device listing redhat correctly identifies my card as a Radeon mobility 9000.

Also a smaller less frequent problem is that when I log out sometimes to change users (the fact that I am logging out is probably not related problems, I think it's just the fact its switching video modes) sometimes the video will just get all wacky and start doing crazy color stuff although i can still partially see the login dialogs. As I said this problem is pretty infrequent, and less pressing.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I have a Dell Latitude C840 laptop and have experienced this problem in windows. I called up dell and they told me to push FN+F7, and that fixed it when it acted up. Since then I haven't had a problem so give that a try.

I haven't experienced this problem in windows, but when I do have a monintor problem in windows, I do hit my monitor reset key (for me its fn+f8) But the problem is that in Linux that my function key doesn't work  .
