Shutting down Toshiba P20

After installing debian on my toshiba P20 (use to be win xp), every time I shut down the system or try to reboot, the system won't power off, and I need to take the battery out, unplug it, then boot it back up by plugging in the power in again to get it to boot up.

How do I fix this? My guess from asking around is that the kernal can't tell the board to power off, but Is their a fix for this?

well your acpi is giving you troubles start your computer go into sets up bios set the way your computer want to shut off in power setting. while your in there if you have a setting for non-os or non windows set the bios to that. Linux only reads the bios it does not control them like windows so if all this is down and when you go to shut your computer off and it stop and the shut down screen just hold down the power button for 3 seconds. good luck.
