set up softmodem in gentoo

Hi!
Im not sure, if its here the right place to ask.

I've an gentoo 2004.2 with kernel 2..6.9. I use gentoo for 2 years now and i've got to say, it is the best distro ever!
I lived in a residence and i used the lan to connect to internet and stuff. But i moved and i dont have a lan-connection anymore.
To connect to the net, i use dialup, which works pretty fine with windows. The modem is a Smartlink 56k.
I did googled and find out that the modem is a softmodem (obviously) and a driver for it, is on the web page of smartlink.
Now i installed it (emerge slmodem and wvdial), but when i tried to run it, it searches for the connections in my serial ports. My modem is intern and therefore there are no serial ports in use. So, i become an error messsage and nothing happens. I unabled serial ports support hoping that it'd solve the problem, but no success. The error message came quickier since there aren't serials ports to check.
I don't know what to do. Pls help me!

P.S. my laptop is a gericom x5 with 256 ram, 30 gb harddisk, 1800 ghz, pentium 4
