serial sync loopback error?

Oh dear, I tried to sync my palm m105 *hehe yes I actually have that piece since the beginning of time* with gnome-pilot in ximian. But my palm gives a odd error message when I press the hotsync button on my cradle;

LOOPBACK DETECTED
you tapped Local sync while attached to a modem. To perform a modem HotSync, tap modem hotsync.

Now this is ridiculous because the cradle is (yes im really sure) to the one and only serial port (parallel IEEE 1284A) on my Thinkpad R31 and NOT to a modem. So what's going on here? Can anyone help my out here?

could this error have anything to do with fact that the cradle output goes through several conversions? (9 pin female cradle output // to 9 pin belkin male input - belkin 25 pin female // to belkin female-male converter // cinto thinkpad 25 pin female serial port)
