Does anybody know how to partition and SD card? I'm trying to install linux in my toshiba e355 pocket pc, but in the instructions it says that my SD card has to be partitioned in linux file system, I just don't know what tool can I use to make this partition, any ideas? Thank you very much in advance.
Thank you Charred, I'm sorry for not being more specific, I'm talking about a secure media card, the instructions are:
In the distro (dist_12_04_2005.tar.bz2), there are two items, a 'dos' directory, and a linux filesystem in a tar.bz2 file. Partition your SD card, and then copy the contents of the dos folder to your SD card and untar the linux filesystem (as root!) onto the *second* partition on your SD card. (wince must use the first partition for its filesystem or it trashes the card, DOH!).
Once you have prepared your SD card, open it in wince, and copy zImage to 'My Documents'. Then click on boot_eXXX depending on what PDA you own. Linux should boot. The first boot can be *VERY* slow as the distro will unpack and configure all its packages. be patient and enjoy the pretty GPE logo.
So this version of linux would actually be booting from inside windows mobile 2003, I'm just having a hard time finding a application, rather for windows or linux to partition my SD card into 2 partitions, I hope I expressed myself better in this one, thank you very much.
Charred, Do you think I should get a pcmcia card reader for my laptop in order to be able to mount the sd card in linux in make 2 partitions? Because I tried to access the SD card through the pocket pc, bu the problem is that it's been showed as a folder instead of a device, anyway thank you very much for your help.
Linux treats everything like it's a file, and you can't partition a mounted device.
Unmount your SD with
Code:
umount /dev/<name>
, then run
Code:
cfdisk /dev/<name>
where <name> == the name of your SD, eg, hda, sda.
If you don't know the name of your SD, check /etc/fstab.
Make sure you're reading the Slackbook. It's an excellent guide for newbies. I've read it MANY times, and I still refer to it often enough that I keep a printed version next to my computer log. Another excellent reference is The Rute User's Tutorial and Exposition.
I'm not being clear enough again, I tried to get my pocket pc to sync with linux, I wasn't successful yet, where you see the SD card as a folder in under windows. what I'm trying to find out is if I buy a pcmcia sd card reader will I be able to make a partition in the SD card with some application, rather under linux or windows, and if I can do what, what application would I be using. Thank you very much for your patience.
