Screen is very dark

The screen on my "Digital Hinote Ultra 2" went black some days ago. It was flashing for a while and then it went black. However, I noticed that it weren't completely black ; it is possible to see text but it is extremely fain and can only be seen from certain angles. Does anyone know what the problem might be? I have tried changing the contrast settings and that does not help. Btw, this might be slightly of-topic since it does not have anything to do with Linux but I found no better place to ask...
Any help will be appreciated!

I don't think there is much of a way to fix this. You could try adjusting the contrast and brightness with the buttons on the monitor. Other than that i think your only option is to get another monitor.

Imerion 01-19-2005 04:27 PM

Adjusting contrast or brightness won't help. It seems the hardware has been set to a dark screen since there is nothing wrong with the screen. When I connect an external monitor, It is dark as well. So it has nothing to do with the screen. Perhaps is something on the motherboard...

Linux might be having a problem correctly detecting you monitor.
If it is not that difficult you might want to try reinstalling linux. This should clear any thing on your computer that went wrong.

The problem is that since I can barely see anything, a re-installation is very hard to do. But I still think its a hardware-based problem. Otherwise the startup-sequence and the BIOS should atleast be seen right?

if it is a hardware problem more complicated then the screen i would just give up on it. Your graphics card could have broken or something. You could buy a new graphics card if you wanted to try to fix your laptop but i would scrap it.

Imerion 01-19-2005 05:01 PM

I guess I should give up. Asking here was kind of my last resort :)

Always happy to try and help out. It is pretty wierd however how your monitor failed. I would be interested in finding out what the problem was just for the fun of it.;)

Imerion 01-19-2005 05:05 PM

If you wish to try and solve the problem, ask away and Ill answer as good as I can. Perhaps we can narrow down the problem. :)

try reinstalling the driver for the graphics card. Without the screen it will probably be difficult so you might want to try removing the card, then booting up, shutting down and then putting back in. After that boot back up and it should detect the card and search for or ask for the driver.

Imerion 01-19-2005 05:20 PM

The problem is that the gfx-card is integrated in the motherboard. The only system on it for the moment is Freedos, which I was installing when the screen died. Perhaps it changed some driver?

tamoneya 01-19-2005 05:20 PM

you could also try to use different resolutions and refresh rates. Try to use the lower ones. I am guessing that the card is slowing not able to keep up any more and is therefor not able to provide enough information to the monitor. Were you overclocking?

Imerion 01-19-2005 06:31 PM

No, I have not been overclocking. And as I said, the boot-sequence is pure text-mode which should be displayed well.

Imerion 01-19-2005 06:57 PM

I think I realized what the error is! I turned of all light in the room and looked at the screen and then I saw nothing. However, under bright light, the text is sligtly visible. The conclusion I came up with is this : the backlit has broken down! Do you think its possible? If so, how to fix it?

tamoneya 01-19-2005 08:43 PM

I thought that it did not work on the screen and a external monitor when you attach it. If this is true than it can not just be part of the screen that is broken. Maybe the graphics card is not telling the screen to use the backlight.
