screen does not power off after shutting the lid

Hi,

I'm a newbie to linux+laptops, though I use linux at home.

I installed Suse 8.2 on gericom x5 force laptop. Everything seems to be working just fine - as far as I had time to test (little). There is one thing bothering me, it seems that the screen would not power off when I shut the lid. It's a waste of energy.

Is there something that can be tweaked? :)

Regards, himba

I had the same problem with my toshiba a while back. From what I can recall, in slack 9.0, I enabled apmd Deamon as well as uncommented out the lines for it in rc.modules. Then try it, and it should work

Well, I already have acpi enabled - by default I guess. I also noticed that there could be some variables set with yast2; sysconfig manager- system-powermanagement-acpi. There are notes that acpi would not work with kernel 2.4 for most of needed functions, but I tried anyway, and even those that supposed to work don't. :(
Should I disable acpi and use apm instead? Do I need to change any bios settings?

did you patch your kernel with the acpi patch?
and did you install the acpi daemon?

I don't know if switching to apm will be the solution ... acpi works fine here, but I had to recompile the kernel for it (slackware)

Ok,

I managed to use power button to shut down the machine - /etc/sysconfig/powermanagent, I also
examined some /proc/acpi values - Some detailed info in battery and other PM stuff. Acpi deamon is up and running. There is a variable under /proc/acpi/button/lid.., that displays current status of lid, and it does work (status alternates as I open and close the lid).

More work to do on this subject tommorow...
