screen always starts/resumes at minimum brightness

I have installed Slackware 12.2 on a Acer Aspire 5710.
Everything is working fine except for one minor annoyance:-
the screen brightness always reverts to minimum, on first starting X, on resume from suspend, and - most annoyingly - after every time the screen is blanked by DPMS. I can adjust it up again with the Fn and arrow-key combo, but after a dozen times in one day having to do this I am getting tired of it. This happens on line power, so it seems to have nothing to do with power saving. Is there any way to set a default brightness level near maximum?

Hello,
does your brigthness buttons are also reversed ? : when you press "brightness up" combo the brightness is decreasing and with "brightness down" it's increasing ?
