S-Video output support on 855GME

Hello. I've got Fujitsu-Siemens P7010 laptop. Graphics is Intel 855GME.

There is an S-Video output. I didn't find any information about how to enable this.

Help please, I'm looking for solution for a long time..

Hey,
I've just ordered a p7010 myself and am very keen to get the tv-out working. I've seen your posts scattered all across the net on this topic, so I guess you really want the tv out to work as much as I do :).

I, myself, haven't found anything that useful but I'm still looking. Did you ever manage to set it up?

Hi

I gathered some information, but currently there is no support for TV-Out in 855GM/GME (this thing also made me contunie to use Windows and stop all Linux experiments).

Technical Infomation about tv-out with 855GM and Chrontel chips is aviable, but no one still didn't write driver for Chrontel 7011 (P7010 use this chip for tv-out). I'm not a programmer and unable to write it..
But the thing, that this driver still isn't aviable (also in commercial X servers) makes me feel that there are some difficulties with making it work.

Another moment is that P7010 works with NTSC TV's but with some problems. PAL TV's seems to be unsupported. I found somewhere official Intel's techdoc about 855GM and XFree(Xorg) and found some interesting options to play with, but didn't try them.

Thanks alot for the quick reply. It's really a pity that no one has written drivers if there are technical documents available. I have no programming skills either, so it seems I will have to keep WinXP on my hard drive just in case I would want to use the tv out.

As a sidenote, I think this is one of the problems that linux as a desktop system necessarily will face as more and more end users, with little or no programming skills, join the community. It might be as you suggest, that there are problems writing the drivers, that we (i.e. me and you) can't see because of our lack of knowledge. But could it not also be that there's simply no one out there who's interested in coding a driver? I don't know... I might force myself to learn how to code just to get this working... (the ricoh SD-reader is annoying too, but that's another issue I guess).

Anyway, if you still have the links to those pages you found, would you mind posting them here? Thanks.

PS. I can't understand why NTSC still is the norm at some places. That's just weird.

First, all techdoc for Chrontel 7011 is aviable at:
http://www.chrontel.com/products/7011.htm

But where did I found techdoc from Intel (about 855gme) I don't remeber.. Also I lost this PDF.

There is driver called 'i810tvout', shipped with Geexbox distro. Maybe it supports 855GME on P7010. But I was unable to start geexbox (it just freezes on my laptop)

Nightfrost 04-26-2005 09:57 AM

Thanks again. I found a page to download the i810tvout package here. The techs for chrontel seem very thorough; I guess I'll try to persuade people around various forums to write a driver :p

VertX 05-03-2005 08:01 AM

Did you try i810tvout package? :)
Also, I found some interesting links:
http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-9106.html
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=27261

also check the last post from the last link, I contains intersting solution for 855GM+Chrontel7007 (Don't know does 7007 compatible with 7011)..

Nightfrost 05-03-2005 09:10 AM

Thanks for the links. I'll check them out as soon as I can. I'm still waiting for my laptop to show up - I ordered it for almost a month ago and I'm starting to get really p*ssed off... They're telling me it should show up before the week is over, so... as soon as the laptop here and I have linux up and running I'll try to get the tvout to work.

Nightfrost 05-15-2005 07:33 AM

OK, finally! The laptop has arrived and I've set up the basics. I have gentoo up and running now, with basically all the packages I need. Time to start getting down with the tv out bit (and if have that working, finally remove WinXP from my hard drive ;)). I'll post anything interesting here.

Perfect! :)
Also, try out to set up ACPI correctly. When I played with it I had problems with 'suspend to ram'. It is not too important, 'cause you can set up hibernate (kernel patch), which works nice with P7010. But There are a lot of things I didn't try. first,

http://acpi.sourceforge.net

And some interesting patch for Lifebook series ACPI is located at leog.net forums. Didn't try Also.

By the way, don't you know is it possible to make cardreader work (the main problem is memory stick)?

Nightfrost 05-19-2005 05:08 AM

So far, I've managed to get (amongst other things) these things to work:

* wireless network
* suspend-to-ram
* hibernate (with some problems, that I think will be resolved in the next kernel release)
* USB/Firewire, etc., No problem using USB-memory sticks
* mouse pad, including the scrollers
* I haven't been able to try PCMCIA and CF, since I don't have anything to try that out wit, but I sort of assume they work nicely, trusting other reports.

Problems I currently have include:

* Use of second monitor, which according to this page should work. (I've even tried his xorg.conf, but something's just not correct)
* TV-out, of course, but I haven't tried very hard as of yet
* I still have some problems with losing dri in X - and sometimes it feels like I lose without previous suspend. (Again, looking forward to next kernel).
* Card reader, fatal evil Ricoh. There are no drivers to make that work. This is very annoying, since I think it should be rather easy for someone knowledgeable in coding to do that (everything is relative of course, and I guess backward-engineering never is easy really, but anyway...)

When I get more order to things, I'm probably gonna put together a p7010-linux-howto :)

VertX 05-21-2005 06:25 PM

Nice :)
It will be very interesting to see if you can make tv-out and ricoh cardreader work!

Nightfrost 05-28-2005 04:29 AM

Hey Vert,

little update on my strives and woes: I've managed to get suspend-to-disk (hibernate) to work as well; I've been trying it a few times and it isn't perfect. E.g, I might get an almost black screen and will have to manually do ctrl-F1 & ctrl-F7. For some reason I can't script this, I have to do it manually. I can give you the details if you want.

I'm still working hard on the dual-head solution with little luck. However, the i810-driver for xorg was updated just a few days ago, and it has supposedly fixed a dual-head problem. Info is here and the new driver is available for download here. I don't know if the TV-out is fixed in that version, but let's cross our fingers.

Also, I was wondering where you got the chrontel information. When I do lspci -v, I get very little info about the video adapter.

VertX 05-30-2005 07:13 AM

I think, tv-out was not fixed, cause there are a lot of tv chips, so it is a great work to make them all work. Anyway, it is worth to try.

About Chrontel 7011 - this information I got from FS support team ;)
