RHEL 5 on Panasonic Toughbook CF-53 - display problems

I have a Panasonic Toughbook CF-53 (hardware I was told to use) and I need to run RHEL 5 on it (OS I was told to use).

My problem is I cannot get the X server to start. I think it may be an issue with RHEL5 not really having support for the graphics chip, as it seems I got a model with fairly new processors in it. Intel i5-3320M with integrated Intel HD Graphic 4000.

In the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, I tried changing the driver from "vesa" to "intel", but still no luck. /usr/share/hwdata/videodrivers indicates intel driver is "Experimental modesetting driver for Intel integrated graphics chipsets". My guess is that RHEL 5.8 hasn't caught up to the newer chipset yet.

intellinuxgraphics.org looks interesting, but all of their stuff is intended for newer kernels (3.x), so won't work for me.

I did try RHEL 6, and it actually did work (not perfectly, but enough). However, I am in a very restrictive environment, and they may not allow me to use 6.

So basically, if anyone can help me find a way to get the X server to start, that would be great.

In your case you have no chance at all besides using the vesa driver. Your IT department should consider its hardware/software choices once again, if they give you hardware that is to new to run the software they want you to run.

It didn't work using the vesa driver either, so, out of luck?

I mentioned that we might have a problem like this when we were buying the computer. But of course, there just wasn't time to look into it further. There's even less time now. I had originally asked for a slightly older model, but they told me it was obsolete and offered this one instead (the only difference being a newer chipset, yay me).

The vesa driver should work on any hardware. Please post the content of /var/log/Xorg.0.log.
