RH9 Gateway 2000 solo 5300 sound & logout problems

Hello there,

I've finally found the time to try out Linux. I love it so far!

My test system:

Gateway Solo 5300 600MHZ
312 MB RAM
20GB HDD
3COM Megahertz 10/100 LAN PC Card model#: 3CCFE574BT
XJ4336 TelePath 33.6 PCMCIA modem
ES1983S Maestro-3i PCI Audio

Here are my problems:

Using GNOME

1.>Logging out; Click the RedHat, select Log out, select Action: Log Out, Click OK button.
The GUI seems to be logging out but then the laptop shuts off!

When I power it back on I get messages that the system was not
shutdown cleanly. Any Ideas?

2.>Sound; When system first starts the sound card is not detected.

When I click the Redhat, select System Settings, select
Soundcard Detection. The sound card is ID'd but the module
is disabled.

I edited the modules.conf in /etc; changing the line:
alias sound-slot-0 disabled
TO
alias sound-slot-0 maestro3

I save the file, go back to SoundCard Detection and the module is enabled, the test sound works. When I reboot the modules.conf is back to the original. Huh?

modules.conf :

Original
-------------------------------------------------
alias 3c574_cs
alias usb-controller usb-uhci
alias eth0 3c574_cs
options 3c574_cs irq=11
alias sound-slot-0 disabled
post-install sound-slot-0 /bin/aumix-minimal -f /etc/.aumixrc -L >/dev/null 2>&1 || :
pre-remove sound-slot-0 /bin/aumix-minimal -f /etc/.aumixrc -S >/dev/null 2>&1 || :
--------------------------------------------------

Changed to:
---------------------------------------------------
alias 3c574_cs
alias usb-controller usb-uhci
alias eth0 3c574_cs
options 3c574_cs irq=11
alias sound-slot-0 maestro3
post-install sound-slot-0 /bin/aumix-minimal -f /etc/.aumixrc -L >/dev/null 2>&1 || :
pre-remove sound-slot-0 /bin/aumix-minimal -f /etc/.aumixrc -S >/dev/null 2>&1 || :
-----------------------------------------------------

Thanks for any help you can offer,

vulture.

Hi

2. You might get away with typing: depmod -ae after you save the file.

Also, try 'cat modules.conf' after saving just to make sure that the change has saved.
