restoring Grub2 to MBR

My laptop has both openSUSE 12.2 and Slackware 14 on separate partitions. Slackware updates recently left me unable to boot into Slackware without installing lilo to the MBR. I did this, checked Slackware was OK. Now I have lilo on the MBR. I try to load openSuSE and get to my log in page where the screen freezes leaving me unable to typ in my password and login. So - I want to restore Grub2 from openSuSE to the MBR. I have booted up Slackware, done chroot to get into openSuSE and have tried "grub2-install /dev/sda". I get the follwing error
Path `/boot/grub2' is not readable by GRUB on boot.

I've tried searching for answers to this and tried various approaches, nothing seems to work. What am I doing wrong?
