Unhappy Redhat9 doesnt detect my laptop monitor!

hi there!
i have a problem while installing RH 8/9 on my compaq pressario 2100 AMD XP 2200+ ,ATI Radeon Mobility ,256MB RAM.during installation with the nousb option(coz it freezes if i dont),the installation goes perfect in the graphical mode, except that it doesnt detect my monitor (says unknown monitor before launching the graphical installation menu),it detects my ATI card though. Finally after everythings installed,at 'startx' it shows fatal xserver error.n when i try 'redhat-config-xfree86' nothing happens ,vga=ask, vga=2 ,lowres,--dpi=75 also dont help.in fact Mandrake 9.1(my current OS) is the only distro that has correctly detected my monitor.Note that all the installation is carried out flawlessly in the graphical mode till startx. Please help!

Ah, the Compaq 2100. I've played with them, and Mandrake's the only Os that i've ever gotten to install on there. The trick i've found is to do the install with the "noauto" option. I have a few other trick I'll post latter.

red hat doesn't use drakconf at all. they have their own tool for configuring x.

try either "Xconfigurator" or "redhat-config-xfree86". the second one is used in rh 9.0 and i think the first command is used in rh 8.0

recommendation from me is at the prompts where it asks to probe, don't let it probe. manually enter in the information. rh to my knowledge doesn't find laptop monitors, but they should let you specify the model/monitor type during installation from a list of monitors.

So, did it work? As a side note, I've always had to specify my laptop monitr as a "1400 x 1050 Digital Flat Panel"... If that helps some more...
