RedHat and Fedora on Inspiron 4000 laptop

I have this weird problem with my Dell Inspiron 4000 laptop. Once upon a time, I was able to install RedHat 7.3 on this laptop (PIII 700, 20 GB drive, 256MB RAM, ATI Rage Mobility video) without problems. However, since then, I have not successfully been able to install newer versions of RedHat. When trying to install both 8.0 and 9.0, the installer would get to the point of selecting the installation type (Worksation, Server, Custom, etc.) but would not allow me to choose any of the selections (I could click all day on them but they'd never be selected) and would not go any farther in the install. I recently tried to install Fedora Core 1.0, and this time I was able to partition the drive and select packages, but then the install died with an error about being unable to open a window (I'll replicate the problem and post the exact error if anyone thinks it'll help the diagnose this problem). I've tried to run the install in text mode, but that craps out in the same place with a slightly different error.

I know people have gotten RedHat and Fedora on laptops like mine, I'm just wondering if anyone can help me with this. RedHat 7.3 still installs and works fine, but I'd kind of like to get up to day with this. :-)
