Hi I,m looking to purchase a laptop which is capable of graphic work (Photo editing0 and looking to spend aroun $1500 AUD. It will only run on Unbutu but needs to be capable of wireless connection to the internet.
Can anyone recommend a reasonable brand and specs?
I'm sure others will chime in, but for a laptop you'll need to pay close attention to the wireless card since some devices have poor support in Linux. I recommend an Intel Pro Wireless card, since I've never had trouble getting them to work. Also, I think most people will agree that the NVidia graphics cards are going to be easier to deal with from a driver standpoint. Other than that I'll say that I really like the Lenovo ThinkPads -- they are very Linux friendly.

i agree, i would tell you to purchase a Dell computer with Intel Wireless device and Nvidia Graphics, anyways if your using Ubuntu you aren't suppose to have any problems since Dell try's to make there PC the most compatible with Ubuntu!
Check the Dell, HP, and Lenovo websites for the Models they sell with Linux..
If they sell the unit with Linux then you should be able to install whatever distro you want on that particular model and have everything function.
Also make use of the Linux laptop websites to check other models/manufacturers.

Maybe I,ve had to many wines tonight but I cant find any online sites that sell lap tops with linux or allow custom build with the option of not having windows?
Avoid 64 bit. I've just gone there and regretted it.
Get big ram and hd for photo editing.
Deltl are fine _until_ something goes wrong. Then you get some guy in india reading you the manual :-(. HP at least support software development in some ways.

How about the TsingHua TongFang (THTF) Z9 LimeBook?
It's was developed solely for operating Linux on and has cracking hardware specs too.
Check this out:

Memory: 256MB~512MB DDRII
Storage: 8GB SSD/HDD
Battery: Li-Fe 3400 mAh. Optional AA rechargeable battery case available.

Looks like interesting specs for a netbook, but I don't think it quite fit's what the OP is looking for. A machine to edit graphics needs a bit more: CPU, RAM, and storage imho... I would probably also look for a Laptop that had an nVidia card in it..
I'm dual booting an Asus L50vn-a1 between Vista (pig and only present to play games) and SLED11. I'm sure Ubuntu would be fine as well. I'll probably reinstall linux to opensuse 11.1 soon. This Asus laptop has an Intel Pro wifi chipset that is as an earlier poster stated, painless. It also has an Nvidia 9650MT graphics chipset that also is ez to deal with using Nvidia drivers. This laptop has 4GB of RAM, Intel core duo cpu at 2.25Mhz I believe. Under linux, its a fast mofo and I'm positive that it could do all manner of video or graphics manipulation. I do a bit of graphics work using gimp. Bottomline, take a look at Asus laptops.
