really need help -- inspiron 8200 SXGA Fedora c2 t3

I posted this on the nvidia forum as well -- i really need help here...

Hi all

I just installed fedora core 2 test 3 and cannot get the graphics card to work (NVIDIA GeForce 2) I downloaded the installer from nvidia and using other forums overcame "kernel interface" issue. I think my driver is installed. I think it is installed correctly but how can I confirm? In the log that the installer left i get a whole bunch of falses, the two install prefixes are "not specified", but it did not error out.

When I type startx i still get the crappy 800x600 res (interesting because fedora core 1 could do 1400x1050 without modification). I think I need a proper XF86Config file. Ill post mine here but it is a hack job as I have been trying to get this to work for a while (so it is a composite of a bunch of config files found in forums)

Any help appreciated...

mike

For starters, try to force it to start only in 1400x1050. Comment out the 24bit section (you have 24bit set as default) and replace it with one with only one mode se. Insert a "pound" character (this - "#") after the "1400x1050" part and the rest of the line will be treated as a comment and those modes will not be available :
Code:

Subsection "Display"
    Depth 24
    Modes "1400x1050" # "800x600" "640x480" "1024x768" "1280x1024"
    ViewPort 0 0
EndSubsection

Restart the X server and see if that can help. If it doesn't, post your full /var/log/XFree*.log file from that try, it may contain useful information.

thanx for responding. Trying to force the 1400x1050 isnt working. I no longer think the problem is related to the config file -- when I look at /var/log/messages there is a line about module license NVIDIA taints kernel. lsmod does not indicate any nvidia modules are running.

Can you tell me how to use some sort of generic driver to get to 1400x1050 resolution? I really dont need the 3d acceleration (would be nice though) and i need to get this machine in workable condition asap.

thanx again

ps -- there was no var/log/XFree* file

hw-tph 05-08-2004 03:22 PM

The nvidia driver module is an actual kernel module, so try loading it using modprobe nvidia before you start X.

try using this:

# Device configured by xf86config:

Section "Device"
Identifier "NVIDIA GeForce"
#BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
Driver "nv" #> this is the line i changed
# disable agp for apm
Option "NvAGP" "0"
#VideoRam 32768
# Insert Clocks lines here if appropriate
#Option "HWCursor" "off"
Option "NoLogo" "1"
# if unstable, try below
#Option "NoRenderAccel" "on"

nv is the generic nvidia driver that you can use. also, make sure you comment out the line that says : Load "glx" ... this should work

good luck... hope this helps

nd

thanx for replying to this post as well.

Do you have any problems with that driver? If not then I will install...did you find nvidias instructions adequate?

Thanx again. The displays on these machines are so nice....
