Question Puppy 2.13 - Closing lid causes black screen - will not re-start. DELL INSPIRON 6400

Hi all, when I close the laptop lid, the screen switches off but does not come back on when it is reopened. A HARD REBOOT IS THEN REQUIRED. I suspect that it is not suspending as I left it with the lid closed for a while and it became pretty hot, considering it was doing nothing. Looking through the forums, I have come across several similar situations but none have been helpful to me as I am a complete nube and need fairly specific advise. It would be nice if there was an easy way to put it into hibernate or suspend and it is esential that it doesn't crash just because I have shut the lid! There is no battery indicator either. Is this relevant?

It is not just Puppy that has probs with the lid, 5 other distros I tried were the same, and ubuntu is the only one i have tried which worked ok. Am I (re)opening a can of worms here? Hope someone can help or even just offer an explanation of what is going wrong. Cheers, Mike.

Hey Mike:
In my limited experience, hibernation and suspension either work or they don't depending on kernel, hardware and distro. For example on Mandriva my laptop doesn't wake up when i suspend it like yours, but on Fedora it does!! There will be a work around but i tried to find one for ages and gave up. My advice would be if you really want suspend try first compiling a custom kernel (http://www.recompile.org/index.php4?page=kernel2.htm incase you've never done it before) with the suspend2 modules checked, or install Ubuntu again if you want hibernate that much. I thought i'd miss it, but to be fair it does save on leccy simply shutting down!!!

Thanks for that lebagyb. I have got a partial fix, see my thread in the puppylinux forum under hardware. The script works great for hibernate but if you want to close the lid, you have to execute it first, which I do by clicking on a desktop shortcut. It would be good to have it set up so that you do not lose everything if you accidently close your lid! Cheers, Mike.

Fair. Good script. Works with puppy but i like my distros finely tuned so don't really like all this adding scripts from desktop malarky. Know that that is the nature of linux but maybe i'm just too lazy. Glad to hear you got it sorted!!
