Problems with notebook Toshiba Satellite L300 with InsydeH2O BIOS

Hi,
I have a Toshiba SatelliteL300-1AM, using Ubuntu 8.10 x86 and the sound is working, webcam working, wifi too. The volume wheel in front of notebook is working also. I had some problems with wifi, but after kernel update to 2.6.27-11, it was solved. At boot I receive the message "unsupported PM cap regs version (7)", and this is from Intel GMA4500 video on-board, because only this adapter has cap regs version (7).

*The biggest problem is Power Management, in fact the Insyde BIOS ! Because of unsupported BIOS the cooling fan is starting quite late, near 70 Celsius and does not stop until next reboot. Second, because of the same Insyde BIOS, I can not activate the FN+Fx keys which are requesting the "toshiba_acpi" module (fnfxd and toshset are the packages who can do this if toshiba_acpi module is activated). The module is present inside kernel, but can not be activated.

user@TOSHIBA:~$ sudo modprobe toshiba_acpi

user@TOSHIBA:~$ cd /lib/modules/2.6.27-11-generic/kernel/drivers/acpi/

I tried to use Omnibook module for notebooks with Phoenix BIOS, but it doesn't work.
Can somenone help to find a way to have control on fan ?
Can someone help to find a way to activate the "toshiba_acpi" module (patch the Insyde BIOS) ?
How to get PM on Intel video adapter GMA4500 ?

Thank you,

Silviu

Hi,

I have the same laptop, and have noticed exactly the same issues. I don't have any answers myself, but I will let you know if I find anything.

I think it could be something related to the BIOS version, however I can't find any updates for this model, or how to update it if I did find a newer version.

Hi,
I found a way to keep the notebook at arround 34-39 degrees Celsius when I'm using it. I installed gkrellm and when is reaching 60 degrees I reboot. The fan starts when booting, but reduce its speed after half a minute, when I let the ubuntu to start again. The fan continue to work at low speed and keep low temperature.

If you update the BIOS version , you'll have the same problem until Toshiba guys will think to release a BIOS version compatible with linux or, hopefully, a new kernel release will solve this problem.
I hope I could help you somehow...
