I'm sorry if this is the wrong place to post this or if I shouldn't be asking such a question here, but I'm really desperate.

I bought a new Acer notebook two days ago, Acer Aspire 5730Z. The OS that came with it was Linux Linpus, that I have absolutely no use of, since it's just a console that I don't know any commands for. So I tried to install Windows XP SP2, but when Windows Setup had finished loading all files and it said that it's starting Windows, I got the infamous blue error screen of death, with the error code 0x0000007B. Since then I've done a lot of Googling, and I came up with good solutions, like using NLite and creating a Windows installation CD with the missing drivers. From what I understand, the problem is most likely not in Linpus itself, but the fact that it's a SATA disk, so I added the missing drivers, burned the ISO to a CD, and when I booted from it, Windows Setup started loading files, then it asked for additional drivers that I could specify by pressing S, but when I did, it said that it found no drivers... so I had the chance to exit the setup or cancel the driver installation, when I did the latter, once again I ended up at the error screen.

My guess is that the drivers are out-of-date or something, but the problem is that the Acer website doesn't even offer drivers for my model, and for other, more or less similar models, it only offers Windows Vista drivers.

My goal is pretty much just to make new partitions, install Windows XP and get rid of the Linpus, and if anyone has any suggestions how I could do that I would be very grateful, right now I'm just frustrated and confused.

Well, this is the forum for Linux questions, and you're having a problem with Windows....

You say it's "just a console that you don't know any commands for". Are you getting the GUI up, or does it boot to text mode? From what I've seen, you should get a GUI, that'll look much like Windows. Double-clicking should work, icons on desktop, etc....not sure what you're looking for.

No GUI whatsoever, I get to the [root@localhost /]# part and that's it then... I thought that Linpus didn't have a GUI? I read that on these boards I think... I'm an absolute newbie to Linux, the most I've done with it is tried a live Ubuntu CD a few years ago... basically what I'm looking for is any suggestions, tips, anything, because I can't really use the laptop for, well, anything now...

Is 5730Z the correct model number? I don't find it on the Acer site and Google brings up a story about someone wanting to replace Vista with XP on a 5730Z which is actually a 5710z or a 5610z.

Yeah, it's correct, as I said in my original post, it's not even on their website and Google doesn't really bring up any drivers for 5730Z, so I don't really know where to find them.

Google not only doesn't bring up any drivers for an Acer Aspire 5730Z, it doesn't bring up any information on that computer at all except your duplicate post on microsoft.public.windowsxp.hardware.

Since there is no information on the internet about that models original configuration or known issues it would be best it you contact Acer which you probably should have done after finding the laptop you purchased failed to boot properly.

i have an Acer Aspire 5730Z with Linux Linpus, what i dont know what does/should it mean. there are white letters only on the desktop and i understand i need to install sth now. but what?? - kubuntus, ubuntus et c.?? i want a picture on my nice booky
which virus-protection do you recommend?

Seriously, if a brand new notebook boots to the command line I would suggest calling the manufacturer before you do anything else.

and change the IDE mode from atc to IDE

I have the same laptop and yeah it is 5730z
acer does offer dirvers (vista only) but I put xp on and all the drivers work fine except the intel gma 4500 driver.

Like the last person said, go to the bios and look for the sata mode and change it from achi(or w/e its on) to IDE, then install xp as normal. Your wifi won't work (I'm running tinyxp rev8, so a regular install may work but I don't know, I don't like the standard xp so I use the "hacked" version instead) But the ethernet should work fine. Acers website sucks but heres where I find my drivers

google doesn't turn anything up because the 5730z really isn't the model number, if you remove the z you get more hits, but there is a bunch they're acer aspire 5730-#### but still not a ton of info. Good luck hopefully I helped, if you get a linux running on it let me know I haven't wanted to piss myself off trying to find drivers for it yet haha. A review on newegg for my model in particular claims to be running ubuntu 8.04 but I really doubt it, as far as I know the graphics card has no linux drivers (except maybe a generic but I don't know for sure)

Odds are it will work just fine with Linux using one of the many how-to's for the Acer Aspire One.. You just have to use a Linux Distro that has a relatively new kernel, and just about everything will magically work. Wireless may still be somewhat of a sticking point depending on what they put in there, but most of us have it running on the AspireOne without too much trouble.
