Problems with connecting external monitor to the laptot

I have a Samsung X11 laptop running with Windows and Mandriva 2007 and try to connect Samsung SyncMaster 2032bw 20" external monitor to it. When I try to press Fn + F4 the picture on both monitors gets destroyed and I need to restart everything to be able to work again. Does anyone know what is going on and how to solve the problem? Thanks.

What do you mean by "gets destroyed" ... can you be a little more specific?

To be more exact, this is what is happening.

I press Fn + F4 and the screen of the laptop becomes black, the external monitor says "Not optimum mode recommended mode 1680 x 1050 60 Hz Analog".
When I press Fn + F4 again, the laptop monitor gets the desktop color and instead of icons on the desktop I see some stripes.

So I went to to the control center and changed the monitor resolution to 1680 x 1050, there was no possibility to make 60 Hz anywhere. After rebooting the same thing happened again, although I checked and it seems like the resolution on the laptop was not changed, it just says 1608 x 1050in the control center.

What else can I try?

Basically there is no automatic detection and the x server is using the same configuration for the external monitor as the normal LCD display which does not work. You need to add a section in the x configuration for the monitor,
