Problem With monitor on toshiba laptop

I had it working once and went to install all packages and now scree does funny tv thing with big square for mouse. I cant use sax2 from command line says access to monitor denied. I try using yast and well goes to same pretty and colorful useless scren once again. What can I do to fix this problem. I tried doing same thing about installing minimal packages and nothing. Why didnt I leave it alone when I installed it the first time. (LOL) I need some play time on this distro please help!!!!

Clarification: the installer works fine, it's just messing up after install, but before you see the login screen for the first time, right?

If so, this sounds like a problem with the X Server Configuration.

Can you boot into a command line (recovery) mode? (It may automatically put you in this mode after a few seconds of the weird monitor display.)

If so, try and grab your xorg.conf and your Xorg.0.log so we can see them. The easiest way to do this is to copy it to a floppy or, if you have a livecd that can read your partition, just somewhere on the partition. The goal here is to grab these files and put them up at www.pastebin.com.

Try:
Code:
sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /your/destination/path/here
sudo cp /var/log/Xorg.0.log /your/destination/path/here
If you can't get them somewhere where you can access them, use the command "less" instead of "cp", and write down any lines that have "!!" or "!!!" in front of them, as well as the last 3 lines of the log.

I'm having a little problem with X too. Misery loves company. :]

not to detract from RAdams, but did you kill the x server- ctrl+alt+backspace and log in as root to run sax? or at root comnd line 'init 3'

Well I cant do the save to disk as I cant get to anything because I cant see. I do log into root though but every time I use sax it says access to monitor denied. and I am using grub to dual boot and using windows portion now to talk. So everything I do now has to be wrote down and tried to see if it works.

Yes, I think you should do what osbie said to login and run sax. It sounds like you need to reconfigure.

The ctrl+alt+backspace kills the X server, or cntrl+alt+f1 thru 6 takes you to a diff terminal that x does not run on and as root 'init 3'( x runs in init 5) where you can get to to the log and xorg.conf or invoke sax. If you can't see anything after doing any of those steps, its not an x problem.

you can also log in in safe mode to get to the files.

You can't get into a "safe" or "recovery" mode at all? Is there any way to get to a command prompt interface?
