problem with changed resolution on my netbook

hi,

I am new to this Linux thing, but I like the idea and i thought i would give it a try.
So I bought an Acer Aspire one, and istalled ubuntu 9.04 on it.

All well, for almost 2 month now! Some quirks, but I like the OS

Until today.

Today I pluged an external monitor to the netbook. and 40" samsung LCD, for a presentation.
That worked ok, I only got resolition 640x480, but it was not so important.

The problem.
When I plugged in the external monitor, it also changed the resolution on the laptop to 640x480. Did not matter I thought, until i COULDN'T GET IT TO SWITCH BACK TO THE OLD RESOlUTION, EVEN AFTER I HAD UNPLUGGED THE CABLE! ARRRGHH I getting mad at this, 640x480 feels really really cramped! and even worse, its in 4:3 format as well, so almost 2¨ of my huge 10¨ display are not being used atm.

I have done what any reasonalbe user would od - check through all the preferences. But under "display" all it says is the current, crappy, resolution, and I cannot choose anything else. I do not know what I had earlier, but I suspect 860x1200 or what the exact number now are.

please help me. with this resolution I cannot use this computer, i spend my entire days with webpages, and webpages don't work at this small resolution. I would hate to give up Linux for such a thing. But I just cannot figure out how to get the old resolution back.

Sorry for the caps, but I am getting really frustraded
